Momotaro Returning Home with Treasure, 1890

Comments - Fascinating image from the folktale of Momotaro (Peach Boy), a boy who emerged from a peach and went off to Devil's Island to slay the demon and carry off the treasure there. On the way, he met a monkey, a pheasant, and a dog, who all agreed to help him in his quest in exchange for one of the dumplings he carried with him. Here, they are returning home in triumph, the dog pulling an elegant cart laden with treasures, including coral branches, a magic hat, and a magic raincoat. The monkey leads the way with an iron club, with Momotaro following behind in warrior attire, holding a fan and carrying a banner topped with a peach. The pheasant marches along at right, a pole arm in one hand and two swords at his side. In the distance, the elderly couple that raised Momotaro wave excitedly from the garden gate. A blossoming peach tree frames the scene at right, with Mt. Fuji visible in the distance beyond low mountains. Includes burnishing on the fan and cart. A terrific, creative illustration from this popular story.
