Sweet Pea, 1889

Series; Comparison of Flowers to Noted Women of All Time

Sweet Pea, 1889 - Interesting portrait of a young beauty who seems rather distraught, looking down with a concerned expression as she anxiously bites the sleeve of her kimono. The oversize leaves and blossoms of a sweet pea vine fill the softly shaded green background behind her. At upper left, an inset shows a robber attacking a man on a rainy night near a notice board, slicing his hat in two and sending his victim tumbling backwards, the scene overlapping a red text panel. An attractive design in an unusual format. A rarely seen beauty series by Shogetsu.

Image Size - 12 3/4" x 8 3/4" + margins as shown
