Gifu Nagaragawa Cormorant Fishing

Comments - Great image of cormorant fishing on the Nagara River in Gifu City, a traditional method still in practice today. Bright fires in hanging baskets lure fish to the surface, then cormorants tied to strings are released. A band around their necks prevents the birds from swallowing any fish they catch, which the fishermen then collect. Other boats carry visitors to watch the fishing. A bold and colorful image of this traditional way of fishing. Published by Kyoto Hanga-in.

Image Size - 10 1/2" x 15 1/2" + margins as shown
