Comments - Attractive portrait of a modern courtesan framed by a streetlight and telegraph lines, innovations newly adapted by Meiji era Japan. She smiles as she looks over her shoulder , a pipe in hand. She wears a purple outer robe with a design of clematis blossoms and a kingfisher over a matching kimono and red under robes, tied with a red tie-dyed obi. A view of the water can be seen behind her with buildings along the opposite shore. A text cartouche at upper right takes the form of a Western-style clock face. Nicely detailed with embossing on the white kimono collar and trim. An interesting design showcasing the rapid modernization taking place in Japan at the time.
