Urashima Taro and the Dragon King's Princess, 1854

Comments - Intriguing scene from the tale of the fisherman Urashima Taro. After rescuing the turtle from children who were teasing it, the animal rewarded him with a visit to the Dragon Palace under the sea. Upon his return a few days later, he discovered that hundreds of years had passed. Here, he visits the Dragon Princess at the palace of her father, the Dragon King. He looks warily over his shoulder as a kneeling beauty dressed in exotic robes tugs at his sash. She wears a headdress topped with a fish, holding her finger to his mouth in a puzzled manner. The princess smiles happily at right, wearing ruffled robes and a magnificent headdress topped with a dragon figurine. Another woman tumbles to the ground before her, wearing a small octopus on her head. A large piece of coral stands in a blue and white ceramic pot at left, and the palace walls are decorated with brightly colored carved panels. A fascinating illustration from this famous legend, with wonderful detail.
