Nun Drawing a Sword, 1851

Comments - Dramatic scene from the tale of the lovers Rokusa and Osono. The disgraced samurai Rokusa sits on the floor at left, cradling a young child on his lap holding a small drum. Rokusa points the drumstick accusingly at Osono, who draws a sword, wearing a nun's mantle over her kimono. A basket hat and a shakuhachi flute like those used by komuso or wandering monks on rests beside her. A toy lion puppet and dog figurine can be seen at lower left, and curtains patterned with cranes hang in the doorway. An interesting image with a nicely detailed setting.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 14 1/4" x 19 3/4" + margins as shown

Condition - This print with excellent detail as shown. Two separate panels. A few holes, repaired. Slight toning, soiling, and creasing. Please see photos for details.
