Horizontal Oban Kabuki Prints by Toyokuni III - Handsome design from an untitled series of horizontal kabuki prints by Toyokuni III dating from 1847 - 1852. The horizontal oban format is an interesting departure from the more commonly seen vertical oban actor prints, allowing Toyokuni III to create detailed settings for the characters. These images provide a nice context for the interaction between the figures. Some prints feature deluxe publishing treatments such as burnishing or embossing. An interesting complement to Toyokuni III's more well-known vertical kabuki designs.

Scene from Sarumawashi Kadode no Hitofushi, 1858 - Terrific scene from the kabuki play "Sarumawashi Kadode no Hitofushi," which tells the story of a former courtesan, Oshun, and her lover, the murderer Denbei, who decide to commit suicide together rather than be parted. The couple meets in her mother's home, where her brother, who is a monkey trainer, sadly comes to realize their plan. The beauty smiles happily at her sweetheart as her brother Yojiro looks up with a pained expression, his monkey dancing about in a red tie-dyed kimono. From, left, the actors are Bando Shuka I as Oshun, Ichikawa Kodanji IV as Yojiro, and Ichikawa Danjuro VIII as Denbei. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in its collection. Wonderful detail in the household setting, with curtains hanging in the doorway and covered shamisen hung on the wall.
