Comments - Fantastic Kuniyoshi triptych of the samurai Yamamoto Kansuke reporting details of the enemy's movements to General Takeda Shingen during the Battle of Kawanakajima. One of Shingen's' trusted "Twenty-four Generals," Kansuke kneels on the rocky shore of the river before his master, who sits on a folding stool surrounded by retainers. Shingen wears a fantastic horned battle helmet with a demon head and shaggy white wig, and he holds a battle fan and a string of prayer beads. Kansuke wears a sashimono or standard featuring a centipede, a device worn by all of Shingen's messengers to make them easily identifiable. The water ripples in undulating waves behind them, the blue contrasting nicely with the pale pebbles of the shore and the colorful armor of the warriors. A great scene with wonderful detail in the setting, armor, and facial expressions.
