The Birth of the Child: Inaka Genji at Suma, 1867

Comments - Handsome kabuki scene of the Inaka or Country Genji at the palace in Suma, celebrating the birth of his child. At left, he smiles happily as a beauty kneels before him in greeting. At bottom center, a matron holds the child to her chest, just the baby's head visible above her purple kimono sleeve. Behind her, a smiling woman carries an elegant lacquer tray with a matching container on it. At right, the mother sits up in bed behind a low folding screen as other women prepare a bath for the newborn. On the floor at center left, a low white table holds an arrangement of pine, plum, and bamboo, along with the figures of the elderly couple Jo and Uba, symbolic of love and fidelity. Includes embossing on the white kimono and white kimono trim. A charming subject with wonderful detail in the interior setting and furnishings. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in its collection.
