Comments - Fantastic six-panel depiction of the Soga Brothers' night attack on Yoritomo's hunting camp at the foot of Mt. Fuji as they seek to avenge their father's death by killing his murderer, Suketsune. The camp is in upheaval as wounded and dying men litter the ground. At left, Soga Juro attacks Nitta Shiro, a retainer of his father's murderer, Suketsune. Juro glares furiously at his enemy, thrusting out his sword, his trademark bird kimono tucked up for easier movement. Shiro grips a pole arm with both hands, drawing the weapon back. At right, Sogo Goro stands with one foot atop a pile of fallen enemies, brandishing his sword with an angry grimace as one of Suketsune's retainers, Goromaru, grabs him from behind. At upper right, Yoritomo sits on a stool inside the hunting lodge, surrounded by seated samurai. Tent walls emblazoned with the paulownia crest of the shogun hang from the pine trees framing the scene, as the rain falls relentlessly against the night sky. A great image from this heroic tale, beautifully colored and detailed. This print is designed as two triptychs that can stand alone or be placed together to make a complete scene featuring both brothers. A great samurai subject, rare to find complete in six panels.
