Original Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864) Japanese Woodblock Print
The Dyer Tokubei, 1847 -1852

Comments - Interesting kabuki portrait of the dyer Tokubei in a style of acting known as ningyoburi, which imitates the exaggerated movements of bunraku puppets. A puppeteer dressed in black from head to toe hides behind the figure, giving the appearance of manipulating the performer. Tokubei strikes a pose with one foot lifted, his head tilted back. The street behind him is lined with buildings and leads to an arched bridge. A nicely detailed image of this seldom seen performance style.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 13 3/4" x 9 3/8"

Condition - This print with excellent detail as shown. A couple small holes, repaired. Very slight rubbing at edges. Please see photos for details.
