Comments - Interesting kabuki portrait of the dyer Tokubei in a style of acting known as ningyoburi, which imitates the exaggerated movements of bunraku puppets. A puppeteer dressed in black from head to toe hides behind the figure, giving the appearance of manipulating the performer. Tokubei strikes a pose with one foot lifted, his head tilted back. The street behind him is lined with buildings and leads to an arched bridge. A nicely detailed image of this seldom seen performance style.
