The Morning after the Night Attack of the 47 Ronin

Comments - Dramatic triptych showing the final act from the kabuki play "Chushingura." The triumphant ronin are returning from the night attack on Moronao's palace on their way to lay their enemy's severed head at the grave of their master, Lord Hangan. An official stops them at the foot of Ryogoku Bridge, waving a message with one hand. The two warriors frown at him, one still wearing the trademark black and white dogtooth-bordered robe, gripping his spear with both hands. The sun rises beyond the arched wooden bridge, spreading a soft red glow along the horizon above the snow-covered city. A terrific scene with large expressive figures and fine shading in the water and sky. Nicely detailed with burnishing on the black areas of the robe.
