Onoe Kikugoro in Dual Roles

Comments - Intriguing kabuki diptych featuring Onoe Kikugoro in dual roles. At left, he plays a samurai in formal court dress, reacting with angry surprise as a jet of water spouts up from between the two men. At right, he portrays a monk or priest with a shaven head, grimacing with rage as water mysteriously jets upwards on either side of him, his hands thrown out at his sides. A strange and fascinating image.
