Magician Attacking a Samurai, 1882

Comments - Dramatic scene of Ichikawa Danjuro as the evil magician Nikki Danjo attacking a samurai. The enraged warrior grips a knife, raising it above his head as he prepares to strike the gray-haired samurai retreating before him. The sleeves of Danjo's black kimono are pushed down to the waist, revealing a white robe over a suit of armor, the sleeves tied back with a purple sash. His intended victim thrusts a fan at him accusingly as he backs away, his lips firmly set. A screen at left features an eagle perched in a pine tree, and tall grasses in soft gray calligraphic line work fill the background. A great composition with large expressive figures. Beautifully detailed with embossing on the white robe and a subtle burnished geometric pattern in the black kimono. A handsome design.
