Revenge of the Ghost of Iwafuji, 1860

Comments - Interesting scene from the kabuki play "Kagamiyama Gonichi no Iwafuji," a drama in which the ghost of the evil Iwafuji returns to haunt the maid Ohatsu, who killed her to avenge her mistress Onoe's death. Now, Ohatsu has become Onoe II, and is attacked while stopping at the graveyard to visit Onoe I's tomb. She falls to the ground as the samurai Mochizuki Danjo strikes her over the shoulder with a wooden grave marker. The spirit of Iwafuji appears in a cloud of mist, holding an umbrella and frowning sullenly. At right, another samurai emerges from the foliage wearing a straw raincoat, lifting his hat high as he looks up. The actors include Ichikawa Kodanji IV as the ghost of Iwafuji, Iwai Kumesaburo III as Onoe II and Seki Sanjuro III as Mochizuki Danjo. A handsome design with expressive figures, detailed with embossing on Iwafuji's white kimono and bokashi shading in the night sky.
