Comments - Dramatic illustration of Soga Brothers' night attack on Yoritomo's hunting camp at the foot of Mt. Fuji as they seek to avenge their father's death by killing his murderer, Suketsune. The camp is in upheaval as wounded and dying men litter the ground. In the center, Sogo Goro stands with one foot atop a pile of fallen enemies, brandishing his sword with an angry grimace as one of Suketsune's retainers, Goromaru, grabs him from behind. At upper right, Yoritomo sits on a stool inside the hunting lodge, surrounded by seated samurai. At upper left, a retainer holds a flaming torch aloft in the driving rain, gripping his weapon as he peers into the dark night. Cloth panels emblazoned with the paulownia crest of the shogun hang from the pine trees framing the scene. The red text cartouche at upper right reads "On the 28th day of the fifth month of 1193, in the foothills of Mount Fuji, the Soga brothers carry out a night attack and achieve their desire." A great image from this heroic tale, beautifully detailed.
