Drawing a Hidden Sword, 1852

Comments - Intriguing kabuki design of a struggle taking place at night. At left, the warrior monk Akamatsu Jutamaru draws a sword concealed in his shakujou, a traditional pilgrim's staff topped with a ringed finial, grimacing as he looks upward. The frightened courtesan Kojoro cowers behind her kimono sleeve as she turns away. At right, the samurai Marikawa Shizuka grabs hold of a cloth-wrapped parcel held by the commoner Warumono Shinsuke, staring at the monk as he tries to tug the package away. Shinsuke frowns as he sinks to the ground, still holding tight. The dark night sky adds an ominous note to the drama. Nice large expressive figures.
