3 a.m. (Gozen sanji), 1890

Series; Scenes of the Twenty-four Hours, A Pictorial Trope, 1890 - 1891

3 a.m. (Gozen sanji), 1890 - Interesting scene of a weary mother struggling with her young son, who is awake at 3 a.m. and crying angrily as he grabs hold of her hair with one hand. She has hastily draped a blue and white cotton robe over her shoulders, her hair pulled back into a knot with loose wisps framing her face. A lamp glows at left, the paper shade torn. The circular inset at right shows a toy obake, a monster or ghost, carrying a sake bottle and dangling from a string. The verse beside it reads:

A monster
will come,
if you don't stop crying!

Nicely detailed with fine line work in the hair and soft shading in the background. An amusing image from this rarely seen Kunichika series illustrating the twenty-four hours of the day.
