The New Eighteen Kabuki: Ichikawa Danjuro IX as a Fujiwara Nakamitsu, 1898

Comments - Handsome kabuki portrait of Ichikawa Danjuro IX as the nobleman Fujiwara Nakamitsu, carrying under his arm a cylindrical box used to hold a severed head for identification. He looks back over his shoulder with a sober frown, his other hand resting atop the hilt of his sword. He wears an elegant robe patterned with medallions over a brown print kimono, and a black court cap. The background is softly shaded with a peachy orange tone, with a checkerboard pattern at upper left featuring the three concentric rice measure crest of the Ichikawa Danjuro line of actors. Beautifully detailed with embossing on the white kimono collar and the hilt of his short sword, and burnishing in the black cap. A striking design with a large central figure.

Image Size - 14 1/4" x 28 1/4" + margins as shown
