Comments - Interesting shin-hanga portrait of Hachiro Kiyokawa, a 19th century scholar and ronin who opposed the Tokugawa shogunate. In 1862, Kiyokawa formed the Roshigumi Corps with funding from the shogunate, ostensibly to protect the Shogun Iemochi when he visited Kyoto to meet the emperor. After recruiting other pro-imperial ronin, Kiyokawa abruptly changed the purpose of the group to work for the emperor instead of the shogun. In 1864, the shogunate had Kiyokawa assassinated. Here, he is shown sitting at a low red lacquer writing desk with a brush in hand, staring outside as a few cherry petals flutter down through the air, a symbol of the transitory nature of life. A folding fan with writing on it rests on the table, alongside an ink stone and a water dipper, and a few other fans. A handsome image and an unusual historical subject for shin-hanga.
