Tokyo Vehicle Traffic, 1870 - Fantastic image depicting vehicles seen in Tokyo in 1870. The contraption at upper left appears to be an early steam-driven form of car driven by foreigners, with one man in front using a crank to steer the front wheels, while another tends a lever attached to the engine. Just below, a Western couple ride in a carriage pulled by a team of horses, the driver raising his whip as the animals trot along. At bottom center, a woman rides in a rickshaw, and at top center, soldiers move a cannon through the street. A fascinating look at modern transportation in Tokyo during the Meiji era. A great subject for a student of history.
