Original Kunisada III (1848 - 1920) Japanese Woodblock Print
Sword Attack, 1889

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene of a samurai attacking a seated man with a sword, gripping the weapon above his head with both hands. His intended victim thrusts a folded sheet of paper at his attacker. Behind the doorway at left, a young man in a bright blue kimono patterned with shogi game pieces prepares to draw his sword as a beauty takes hold of the scabbard. A fellow in a lion print robe thrusts his hand out to stop him, gripping his own sword with a white cloth. From left, the actors are Nakamura Fukusuke IV, Ichikawa [?], Ichikawa Sadanji I, Ichikawa Danjuro IX, and Onoe Kikugoro V. At intriguing scene with vibrant color, nicely detailed with burnishing on the black kimono and the black kimono collars.
