Rebel Leader Saigo Takamori, 1878

Comments - Terrific kabuki image featuring from left, Ichikawa Sadanji as Kirino Toshiaki, Ichikawa Danjuro as the leader of the rebel samurai Saigo Takamori, and Onoe Kikugoro as Shinohara Kunimoto. The men are gathered around a table beneath a blossoming cherry tree at night, perhaps discussing strategy. At left, Toshiaki grimaces angrily at Saigo, a map in his hand. His hair is cut short in the latest Meiji fashion. Wearing a military uniform and plumed hat, Saigo stares calmly back at him as he lifts a goblet. At right, the scowling Kunimoto is dressed in a green kimono patterned with dragons. The table holds dishes of carefully arranged snacks, a pitcher, and glasses. A handsome design with large colorful figures set off by the dark night sky. Includes burnishing on Saigo's hat, embossing on the white areas of Toshiaki's vest and the feathers on Saigo's hat, and touches of metallic pigment that have oxidized to a dark tone.
