Original Kunisada III (1848 - 1920) Japanese Woodblock Print
Onoe Kikugoro in His Dressing Room, 1902

Comments - Great backstage portrait of Onoe Kikugoro holding a brush in one hand and a horned hannya mask of a jealous woman in the other. His own stage makeup is the same as the masks, and he stares at it solemnly. His boldly patterned kimono adds graphic impact and contrasts nicely with the deep red under robe. At left, a red makeup stand holds brushes and containers of makeup along with a mirror. At right, a stack of folded robes rests atop a large black wicker trunk. An inset above depicts a man looking at him, frowning slightly. A powerful kabuki design.
