Comments - Fantastic kabuki portrait of Ichikawa Sadanji I as the warrior Atsumi Goro in the play "Akamatsu Manyu Ume no Shirahata" (Akamatsu Manyu and the White Plum Banner), which premiered at the Shintomiza in 1879. He strikes a bold pose, strangely holding his sword behind him in a backwards grip, his other hand clenched in a fist before his chest. He wears a fine suit of armor over a print kimono, his long hair falling wildly over his shoulders, giving him a rather disheveled appearance. Two enormous crests fill the purple background behind him, each encircled with a wreath of bamboo and flowering plum branches. A terrific composition, vibrantly colored and detailed with burnishing in the armor, fine line work in the hair, and embossing in the white sash around his waist. A striking design.
