Officers and Soldiers in a Boat, 1882

Comments - Intriguing kabuki scene of a boat filled with officers and soldiers attempting to flag down a steamship in the distance. Two of the men wave Japanese flags, while the bearded officer in the center raises his hand above his eyes as he scans the water. He wears a black uniform decorated with gold braid. All of the men have their hair cropped short in the modern Meiji style. A great bold design with large colorful figures, nicely detailed with fine line work in the hair, bokashi shading in the water and night sky, a dusting of mica across the top of the sky, and burnishing in the black uniforms.
