Comments - Fantastic triptych depicting the famous battle at the Taira fortress of Ichi-no-Tani in 1184. The castle sat on a narrow strip of land with mountains on one side and the sea on the other. Here, Yoshitsune's forces attack along the coast, charging forward from the right with the Minamoto battle standards flying high. In the center, the Minamoto general Kumagai Jiro Naozane faces the young Taira Prince Atsumori on horseback, the youth thrusting his sword forward at left as the Nazozane wields his weapon with both hands, holding it over his head. The dramatic coastal scenery makes a spectacular setting for the scene. A terrific woodblock illustrating one of the most famous battles during the Genpei War. A great choice for a samurai enthusiast or a student of military history.
