The Life of Shakyamuni Illustrated - Released in 6 volumes in 1845, Hokusai's "The Life of Shakyamuni Illustrated" (Shaka goichidaiki zue) relates the story of Shakyamuni, the historical Buddha. The books feature stories of rebirth and the "Righteous Path" to serve as examples to the Buddhist community. Several images include deities or demons, with Buddha or Bodhisattvas triumphing over evil, while others depict the spread of Buddhism from India to China and Korea.
