Nakamura Fukusuke I as Ishikawa Goemon Kakemono, 1855

Comments - Fantastic kakemono or vertical diptych featuring a scene from the kabuki play popularly known as "Gosan no Kiri." Here, the famous thief Ishikawa Goemon stands on the verandah of the lower gate at Nazenji Temple, forcing a guard to his knees by grabbing hold of his iron truncheon and twisting it behind his neck. Goemon scowls angrily, his lips tightly pressed together in a frown, holding a poem slip aloft in his other hand. He wears a beautiful black kimono with a burnished geometric pattern, a heavy outer kimono featuring a dragon and a green brocade lining draped over his shoulders. Below, his wife Oritsu, who is making a religious pilgrimage, stands beside a large water basin holding a dipper and a folding fan. She looks up at her husband with a somewhat sly expression. She wears a white pilgrim's vest over her floral kimono, and has a string of prayer slips around her neck. The actors are Nakamura Fukusuke I as Ishikawa Goemon and Onoe Kikujiro II as Oritsu. Beautifully colored and detailed, with cherry blossoms framing the scene overhead. A handsome image from this famous drama, in an unusual vertical format.
