From an untitled series of horizontal oban kabuki prints

Horizontal Oban Kabuki Prints by Toyokuni III - Handsome design from an untitled series of horizontal kabuki prints by Toyokuni III dating from 1847 - 1852. The horizontal oban format is an interesting departure from the more commonly seen vertical oban actor prints, allowing Toyokuni III to create detailed settings for the characters. These images provide a nice context for the interaction between the figures. Some prints feature deluxe publishing treatments such as burnishing or embossing. An interesting complement to Toyokuni III's more well-known vertical kabuki designs.

Scene from Aoto Banashi, 1847 - 1852 - Intriguing scene from the play Aoto Banashi, featuring Seki Sanjuro III as the doctor Hofunei, Nakamura Utaemon IV as Bokusha Sangokuken, Ichimura Uzaemon XII as Tobi-no-mono Kamekichi, and Bando Shuka I as the geisha Ohide. The fellow kneeling at right holds what looks like a wig in his hand, scratching his head in a puzzled manner. The standing man in the center looks down with a horrified expression as he holds a folding fan behind his head. Blossoming plum branches frame the pink sky above. An interesting subject.
