The Night Attack of Kumasaka at Akasaka Station in Mino Province, 1860

Comments - Fantastic triptych showing the young Ushiwakamaru (the future Minamoto no Yoshitsune) battling the brigand Kumasaka Chohan and his gang when they attacked an inn at Akasaka Station. The youth fights two opponents simultaneously, striking one enemy on the shoulder with his sword as he extends his fan to block a blow from the samurai at far right. Another rogue leaps on one foot at left, the light from his lantern casting a shaft of light across the scene. The melee continues all around, with attackers grabbing women and tying them to pillars while other men clash with swords and sickles. Wonderful expressive faces and characters in this exciting battle. An incredible scene filled with terrific detail and wonderful handling of the effects of the lantern light. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in its collection.
