Series; Annals of the Meiji Period

The Empress at the Railway Station in Nishikyo, 1876 - Attractive triptych depicting the Meiji Empress and court beauties in procession at the railway station in Nishikyo. At left, a young woman carefully carries an elaborate headdress decorated with strings of beads and a phoenix. Two women follow behind leading the empress by the hand, a third woman sheltering her with a purple Western-style umbrella. The women are all dressed in delicately embossed white robes tucked into full red hakama pants, with a colorful outer kimono. At right, two horses lead a carriage alongside the group. An intriguing Yoshitoshi subject with burnishing in the black carriage and bokashi shading in the background.
