The Tokaido - In the 1860s, Hiroshige II did two very similar vertical chuban size Tokaido series, each with the same title cartouche. This series dates from 1863 - 1864, and is distinguished by the signature of "Hiroshige." These handsome designs commemorate the journey of the Shogun from Edo to Kyoto in 1863 to pay his respects to the Emperor. The Shogun's power was in decline at the time, and the procession had not been made for many years, so this was an important event. Hiroshige II shows the procession traveling through the countryside with standard bearers and retainers dressed in matching attire, making their way across bridges or past beautiful natural features such as mountains and rushing rivers. An attractive series memorializing this historic procession, with nice detail and color.
