Series; Thirty-six Restaurants of Tokyo, circa 1870

Thirty-six Restaurants of Tokyo - Attractive design from Kunichika's seldom-seen series pairing beauties with Tokyo restaurants. Each image features a half-length portrait of a beauty engaged in everyday activities, with a rectangular inset with a view of the restaurant or the food specialties served there. The background is divided diagonally with a traditional red tie-dyed textile pattern across the top and an images of flowers, trees, or grasses below drawn with bold calligraphic linework in gray silhouette against a lighter gray background. A charming, colorful series, nicely detailed.

Special detail - Beautiful burnished checked pattern on the black kimono.
