A Fuji Arts Special Offer Auction

Goshawk, Pine, and Rising Sun Kakemono, 1852 - Terrific Hiroshige kakemono or vertical diptych of a regal goshawk perched on a rugged pine tree with a red sun rising in the sky. The pine tree is a treasured Japanese symbol of longevity. Hiroshige uses a handsome variety of line work with calligraphic strokes detailing the rough tree bark and finer lines creating the feathers and pine needles. A dramatic composition with the diagonal lines of the tree moving the eye down the page in a zigzag fashion, in contrast to the strong vertical of the bird, with the delicately shaded red sun filling the sky behind. A powerful work that would make an outstanding framed display. Full oban kakemono prints by Hiroshige are quite rare and this is a fantastic subject.
