by Yoshitsuna (active circa 1848 - 1868)
Comments - Great kabuki portrait of an actor wearing a coat with a striking design of a dragon emerging from black clouds in front of Mt. Fuji. He has a mask of Fukujo on his head, and cradles another of Fukusuke in his arm, a folding fan in one hand. Fukusuke figures are considered lucky. The text block at left reads: "At the Hour of the Horse on the 8th Day of the 5th Month, People Born in Earth and Water Signs Enter a Lucky Cycle." Of this print, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, writes "According to yin-yang divination (onmyodo), luck followed a cycle of seven good years and then five bad years, according to one's year of birth. The ages of people in the lucky categories are listed." An interesting and unusual design.
