Shima Art Company - Founded in 1908 in New York City by Kobe-born E. T. Shima, the Shima Art Company began publishing shin-hanga prints and ukiyo-reprints in the late 1920s, working with two companies in Japan to produce the woodblock prints. These lovely reprints accurately reproduce the fine line work and coloring of the original designs. Most bear the Shima seal, a crane with outstretched wings over Mt. Fuji. In 1940, the well-known Japanese print collector Robert O. Muller bought the company, renaming it the Robert Lee Gallery in October 1940. A great opportunity to add a classic ukiyo-e subject to your collection.
Comments - Lovely shin-hanga interpretation of an ink and wash painting by the Edo era artist Kusumi Morikage. A charming image of monkeys sitting in a tree, with one reaching down as if to touch the full moon at lower left. Beautifully printed with calligraphic line work. With red Shima seal at center left and "Made in Japan" stamp on reverse.
Artist - After Morikage (circa 1620 - 1690)
Image Size - 15 1/4" x 6 5/8"
Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Slight toning, a couple light creases at edges. Please see photos for details. Nice overall.
