Comments - Terrific scene from the Battle of Ichi-no-tani between Taira and Minamoto forces. In the center, the Minamoto warrior Kumagai Naozane chases after the young Taira Atsumori, who has ridden his dappled horse into the water in an effort to escape. From astride his mount, Naozane waves his folding fan at the youth, urging him to return to shore and engage in combat. After capturing Atsumori, he realized that that his enemy was a young prince in his first battle, but he was honor bound to kill him. He tearfully beheaded the boy, who was the same age as his own son, and later became a Buddhist monk. The surf rolls in white-capped waves along the shore, while the battle continues between the boats beyond as archers fire at the enemies. A dramatic image of this famous tale, beautifully detailed.

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Three separate panels. Paper remnants on reverse from previous backing. Tiny loss at corner, a few small tears at edges, repaired. Creasing, slight toning and soiling, a couple whitish stains. Please see photos for details.
