Nakamura Shikan as an Angry Warrior, 1868

Comments - Bold kabuki portrait of Nakamura Shikan as an angry warrior, glaring at a young samurai standing atop a wicker trunk or chest at right. He wears a black robe with a burnished pattern over a suit of armor, and holds a patterned gray cloth in one hand and a pole arm in the other. The youth frowns back at him with a sword in hand and one foot in the air as if ready to attack. Hear wears a vest over his armor and pants decorated with a red torii lacquer fence and torii gate from a shrine. A terrific design with the large figure dominating the composition. The first time we've seen this kabuki triptych.
