Series; Twelve Months of Customs and Manners in Edo
Fourth Month: Viewing Peonies, 1889 - Terrific illustration of a samurai and a sumo wrestler visiting a peony garden in spring, accompanied by upper-class beauties. The samurai stands in the center wearing a black kimono, his young sword bearer following behind him. The wrestler approaches from the right, the two men frowning at each other. The elegantly dressed women smile and admire the colorful oversize blossoms framing the scene, a lake spreading out behind them with a narrow bridge leading to a small teahouse perched atop a hill. Beautifully detailed with burnished patterns on both men's robes, and delicate embossing on the women's white kimono collars. A lovely spring subject with soft shading in the water and sky. Beautiful color and condition.
