A Fuji Arts Special Offer Auction

The Palace at Soma in the Earlier Taiheiki, 1868 - Interesting depiction of a ceremony at the Soma Palace from the tale of "The Taiheiki," a 14th century epic dealing with the warring period between the Northern and Southern courts in Japan. Samurai are gathered around the room, with a daimyo in formal court dress sitting on a stool at right, watching the ceremony with a frown. The other warriors grimace angrily as a beauty holding a long-handled sake server bows at left. Outside the palace, samurai are assembled for battle, their fluttering banners and standards visible above the verandah railing as smoke from a bonfire drifts upwards. A handsome early Yoshitoshi design with expressive figures.
