The Nawa Clan Helping Emperor Go-daigo Return from Exile, 1879 - Terrific depiction of a samurai Nawa Nagashige helping the deposed Emperor Go-Daigo return from his exile on Oki Island. Under cover of darkness, men have rowed a boat as close to shore as possible to deliver the emperor back to the mainland in an attempt to regain his power. His faithful retainer, Nawa Nagashige, carries the ruler ashore on his back, wading through the shallow waves lapping at the rocky beach. A fantastic historic subject, with an atmospheric night setting. Beautifully detailed with embossing in the emperor's white robe, fine bokashi shading, and a dusting of mica across the top of the night sky. Signed "Kiyochika in the style of Yoshitoshi."
