Comments - Fantastic illustration from the kabuki play "Sanmon Gosan no Kiri," which tells the story of a young robber named Ishikawa Goemon, who attempts to kill Mashiba Hisayoshi, who was responsible for the deaths of both his father and his adoptive father. In an inset at upper right, Goemon, stands on the verandah of Nazenji Temple, throwing his hand up with rage as he realizes that the pilgrim standing below is indeed his enemy, Hisayoshi. His intended victim frowns up at him, wearing a white pilgrim's vest and a string of prayer slips around his neck, raising a water dipper in hand. Ishikawa Danjuro plays Goemon. Beautifully detailed with embossing on the white vest and a burnished geometric pattern on the black kimono. A terrific, bold composition with the large figure dominating the scene against a yellow background.
