Celebrating a Hit Performance on the Third Floor of the Theater, 1864

Comments - Fantastic scene of actors celebrating a hit performance on the third floor of a theater. In the center, an actor in a black robe kneels on a red mat. Behind him, a boat has been ingeniously constructed using umbrellas, geta clogs, tobacco sets, and trays. The crowd in the foreground chats excitedly, some smiling and others scowling or grimacing. The right panel includes Bando Sajuro I, Nakamura Tsuruzo I, Nakamura Ganpachi I, Ichikawa Yaozo VI, Ichikawa Shinsha, Ichikawa Shinnosuke IV, and Ichikawa Danzo VI. The center panel includes Bando Kamezo I, Seki Magoroku, Kawarazaki Gonjuro I, and Matsumoto Icho (?). The left panel includes Arashi Kangoro I (C), Nakamura Aizo I, Kawarazaki Kunitaro I, Ichikawa Misuji, Iwai Shijaku II, and Bando Hikosaburo V. A fascinating peek backstage at a kabuki theater with wonderful detail, also in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Includes burnishing on the black kimono.
