Handsome and Brave Heroes of the Suikoden - In 1866, Yoshitoshi began work on a fantastic 50 print series called the "Handsome and Brave Heroes of the Suikoden" (Biyu Suikoden). Instead of depicting the traditional characters from the novel "Suikoden," Yoshitoshi chose to use his own set of heroes from Japanese history and legend for this series. He also incorporated spirits and monsters, resulting in a very unusual and creative twist on the classic Suikoden theme. These bold and lively images feature beautifully colored and detailed figures in striking poses, many with supernatural or magical creatures. Some feature deluxe embellishments such as embossing or burnishing. These early chuban designs by Yoshitoshi are a great choice for a collector interested in this legendary tale. 

The Temple Page Shiragikumaru Wrestling a Demon - Terrific scene of the acolyte Terakosho Shiragikumaru wrestling a green demon at Kaiko-ji Temple. With one foot he stomps on the fallen demon, a determined expression on his face and his hands clenched into fists. The creature sprawls on its back on the stone floor, howling in pain. The young boy wears a blue kimono patterned with yellow blossoms and leaves, tucked into darker blue hakama pants with delicate floral medallions. His hair is pulled back into a thick loop at the back of his head. Ivy grows up the side of the temple building at left. A handsome design with attractive color.

Condition - This print with excellent detail as shown. Slight paper remnants on reverse from previous mounting. Tiny loss at corner, stitching holes at side, repaired. Slight soiling, a few creases and stains. Please see photos for details.
