The Battle of Ishibashiyama, 1893

Comments - Interesting kabuki depiction from the Battle of Ishibashiyama of samurai fighting along the rocky shore. In the center, a warrior wearing a horned helmet grabs the wrist of the samurai reaching around him from behind. With his other hand, his attacker draws the sword from the scabbard between his teeth, his long hair falling loose over his shoulders. At right, another samurai grips his weapon above his head with both hands as he eyes the helmeted warrior. At left, a young samurai watches the confrontation over his shoulder, warily eyeing the swordsman at right. A pine tree frames the view at right, with mountains beyond the water and a few sails on the horizon. A lively action scene.
