The 47 Ronin's Night Attack on Moronao's Mansion, 1890

Comments - Terrific scene from the kabuki play "Kanadehon Chushingura" of the 47 ronin's night attack on Moronao's mansion. Here, three ronin surround one of Moronao's retainers, jabbing at him with spears as he wields a sword in each hand. He stares at his attacker with a determined grimace, his back against a stone lantern beneath a pine tree. At upper left, a young samurai raises his sword above his head with both hands. The ronin all wear their distinctive black and white dogtooth bordered robe over their kimono and armor. On the far side of the garden pond, figures in dark silhouette can be seen fighting in the snow and on the verandah of the palace at left and throughout the garden at upper right. A lively action scene, beautifully composed and vibrantly colored, with a dusting of mica across the sky, and metallic pigment that has oxidized to a darker tone on the swords and the blades of the spears. A great design.
