New Play at the Kabuki Theater: Heike Monogatari, 1896

Comments - Handsome kabuki triptych featuring a scene from the play "Heike Monogatari" at the Kabukiza or Kabuki Theater. From left, the actors are Ichikawa Danjuro as Cabinet Minister Shigemori, Ichikawa Yaozo as the Priest Jokai, and Ichikawa Shinzo as General Munemori. The priest eyes Shigemori as he holds his prayer beads, the minister frowning back at him. Nice large figures, with skillful handling of the priest's armor as seen through his sheer orange robe. A fine printing with deluxe burnishing on both black court caps and the edges of the fans, and embossing on the hilts of the swords, white kimono collars, and fans.

Artist - Kunichika (1835 - 1900)

Image Size - 14" x 28 3/8" + margins as shown

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Three separate panels. A few light creases at edges, very slight soiling. Please see photos for details.
