Original Kuniyoshi (1797 - 1861) Japanese Woodblock Print
Evening Cool at Ryogoku, 1849

Comments - Terrific, rare complete six-panel depiction of actors offstage enjoying the evening cool at Ryogoku as fireworks explode in the night sky. At right, a beauty sits on a bench with a fan in hand, a white cloth draped over her shoulder. The man in the fourth panel from the left wears an interesting blue and white kimono patterned with lobsters in a fishing net. Ryogoku Bridge can be seen at left, crowded with people enjoying the fireworks display. Dark clouds hang above the water, with boats and the city shoreline in the distance at right. A terrific aizuri-e or primarily blue design, rare to find complete. A great subject for a Kuniyoshi collector.

Artist - Kuniyoshi (1797 - 1861)
