Three Street Knights, 1865

Comments - Terrific kabuki triptych of three otokodate or street knights. In the center, Rokuji Namuemon wears a fantastic kimono patterned with a go board covered with black and white playing pieces and shogi game pieces. He pours a cup of sake from a gourd container, a worried expression on his face. At left, Nozarashi Gosuke looks back at him with a disdainful smirk, his kimono featuring a design of a skull and ribcages. At right, Ukiyo Tohei stares at Rokuji with an unhappy scowl as he holds his cup out. From left, the actors are Ichimura Kakitsu IV as Nozarashi Gosuke, Ichikawa Danzo VI as Rokuji Namuemon, and Bando Hikosaburo V as Ukiyo Tohei. An intriguing scene with large expressive figures. A great choice for a collector interested in go board subjects.
